Vasilisa the Fair: Baba Yaga's Hut by vitaliyv Vasilisa the Fair: Baba Yaga's Hut by vitaliyv
Baba Yaga is the terrible, ancient witch and grandmother of Rus. Neither evil nor good, she is often an obstacle - the puzzle to throw the hero off.

She lives in a magical hut that sits on two chicken legs, surrounded by a fence of bones with skulls who glow at night.

It is here that poor Vasilisa is sent by her wicked step-sisters, to get a light.

Vasilisa's stepsisters sent her to Baba Yaga to get rid of her,but instead Babushka gave girl wisdom, strenght and weapon to get rid of her family. For a  Mother Nature, even a demonized form, she surely lives in a eccentric and humble home.Knowing what she is like, when she starts fighting against us for pollution,we are finished.Screw Gaia,Baba Yaga is true thing.

Well yes. I don't mean to ignore my fellow Slavs - but she's something that I feel predates such distinctions... :)

she was the most frightful for me in my childhood in Ukrainian fairy-tails XD
especially when in Ukrainian tails she was eating children O_O
in Russian she could be sometimes not bad..but in Ukrainian tails..she lived in the ordinary human house in the Forest ...but she was stealing children..even good children...
I am 28, but I still can not open that book, where she is drawn XDDDDD
I am afraid of that illustration still, where she stole the boy and wanted to eat him XD

p.s. I know also that by Baba Jaga even Germans began to frighten their children XD

That's amazing and part of the appeal for me to draw her. And while I wasn't really raised on fairy tales - in the ones I've read she's evil, demanding and terrible, but always fair. Most fascinating is the suggestion that she's a remnant of some ancient deity in the way she controls time and the riches of the earth.

Such dark mysteries!

If I may, considering many ancient deities were created to explain great and terrible natural events, it would make good sense that such a mythical figure has origins in the divine.

You make me want to study Russian folklore. :)

Oh I wish you would - it's endlessly fascinating - and for everyone, different. Sometimes hard to find in a "good" translation, it's best to let your mind wander as you read it. :)

And a great explanation too - why she exists we may never know but we are all richer for it.
